Shorthorn junior wins state on final shot put attempt

It may or may not have been a recent batch of grandma’s brownies or the extra footwork exercise from filling in at a summer basketball tournament the prior Saturday, but Shorthorn junior Tristan Wendt was able to “put” a little extra into his last attempt in the shot at the state track meet.

That throw – 55 feet, three-quarters of an inch – was Wendt’s personal best, upped the school record he already had broken, and earned him the Class 2A gold medal at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on Saturday, May 11.

“When I was going up there (for the final attempt), I could feel the adrenaline pumping,” Wendt said. “When I released it, I knew it was my best throw.”

Horns use ‘small ball’ in area series sweep of East Chambers; Danbury up next

Two of the Shorthorns’ three sacrifice bunts helped pull out game one Friday night and scratching out six runs on one hit closed out the area playoff series Saturday afternoon over East Chambers at Houston Kinkaid.

Schulenburg (23-6) will return to Kinkaid for a regional quarterfinal series against Danbury this week. Game one is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. with game two, Friday at 7 p.m., and game three, if necessary, Saturday at 7 p.m.

Along with the bunts, several of the seven passed balls by the Buccaneer catcher factored into last Friday’s 2-1 win in eight innings.... Read more

Staha earns all-state at Pflugerville High

Amy Staha was named to the Class 5A all-state basketball team as selected by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Staha, a senior, shot 54 percent from the field which included 63-of-123 three-point field goals. Playing for coach Nancy Walling, she also earned first-team all-district, all-region, academic all-district (all four years of high school), and academic all-state. Staha signed a basketball scholarship in November and will be playing in the Southland Conference for Northwestern State University in Louisiana.

Amy is the granddaughter of Irene Staha, a long-time resident of Schulenburg and Hallettsville. Read more

Local ball players enjoy Missions game

Members of the Schulenburg Rivercats Little League team attended the San Antonio Missions-Corpus Christi Hooks game on Sunday, May 5 at Wolff Stadium which included the 26th Annual On-Field Player Clinic.

More than 60 players, coaches, and parents attended this special event provided by the Missions, which is the Double A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

Riverdawgs place second

The Colorado Riverdawgs, a newly-formed 8U tournament team from La Grange, Columbus, Round Top, and Schulenburg, placed second in the Tripleplay Sportsplex “The Zone” tournament in Georgetown April 27-28.

Softball, kickball planned for Tom Tom

Early registration has begun for the annual Yoakum Tom Tom softball & kickball tournaments set for May 31, June 1-2.

There will be a men’s and co-ed division for the softball tournament while the kickball tournament, which will take place only on Friday and Saturday night, will be co-ed only.

Early-bird entry fee discounts will be given for those who register and pay early. Through May 24, entry fees will only be $125 per team. All entry fees will jump to $150 per team after May 24.
