Sister Denise Demel (center) retired in 2002 and was the last of the Sisters of Divine Providence to teach at St. Rose. She attended the 10 a.m. Mass and took a tour of the campus – even leaving a note on the white board in her old religion classroom where three current junior high religion classes are taught. She looked through memorabilia in the gym and reminisced with many former students and staff members. She is shown with Rev. Tim Kosler and principal Rosanne Gallia.

In the photo, Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Martin arrives on the scene to shut down traffic as smoke from a large grass fire billows across Interstate 10. The fire burned about 50 acres on both sides of I-10 east of town. Schulenburg, Weimar and Flatonia firefighters battled the blaze for 5 hours on Thursday. SVFD returned three times over the next two days to “mop up” hot spots that reignited. Sticker Photo By Andy Behlen
