Lucy’s story is bittersweet. She was found as a lonely, hungry emaciated stray on Independence Day. One of the shelter’s longtime supporters was on an outing with her children when they spotted her. She was easily coaxed to them. She must have known that nothing they would do could be worse than the life she was living.

She arrived at the shelter full of fleas and ribs showing. She warmed up to staff and other dogs within days. She gained weight, learned basic commands and to walk on a leash.

THEN, she tested positive for heartworms. At first, it was a vigorous treatment with antibiotics twice a day and low activity. This meant that Lucy could no longer go out in her play group and romp the property all day. She has been restricted to a small yard and short walks.

Although she is now only taking a once-a-month heartworm pill like everyone else, it may be a year or more before she tests negative. If you’ve considered adding a dog to your family, please stop by the shelter to visit with Lucy.
