Irene Ella Koopmann


Irene Ella (Meyer) Koopmann, 72, of La Grange, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019.

Irene was born in Hallettsville on Aug. 10, 1947, the daughter of Ferdinand and Ella (Blaschke) Meyer. Irene married Werner “Johnny” Koopmann Jr. on April 28, 1973 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in La Grange. In her early life, she worked at Stanzel’s in Schulenburg and was a caregiver. She was a domestic housekeeper for the last 30 years and assisted her husband with various paint jobs.

Irene is survived by her husband of 46 years, Werner “Johnny” Koopmann Jr. of La Grange; son, Jason Koopmann and wife Stephanie of Weimar; daughter, Theresia Karstedt and husband Kevin Karstedt Sr. of La Grange; eight grandchildren, Nick, Kaylee, Camyron and Trinity Koopmann, Victoria Dominguez and husband Emmanuel of Weimar, Caitlyn Muras of Weimar, and K.J. and Kelli Karstedt of La Grange; three brothers, Willie Meyer and wife Cynthia, James Meyer, and Harvey Meyer and wife Denise, all of Schulenburg; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Strmiska and Judy Zuhn; three brothers- in- law, Martin Koopmann Sr. and wife Karen of La Grange, Wayne Koopmann of La Grange, and James Koopmann and wife Janice of Santa Fe, TX; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in -law, Werner and Louise Koopmann Sr.; three children, Darrell, Louise and Werner Koopmann III; and two brothers-in- law, Norbert Strmiska and Josh Zuhn.

A visitation was held on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019 from noon to 7 p.m. at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations in La Grange. Family received-friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A prayer service was recited at 7 p.m.

Funeral services were held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in La Grange on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019 at 10 a.m. Burial followed at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Hospice Brazos Valley, Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter, or a charity of one’s choice.
