Carolyn Lillian (Schuetze) Hunger, 81, of La Grange, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023, at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin.

Carolyn was born in Freyburg on July 15, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Olga (Ohnheiser) and Monroe Schuetze. As a child, Carolyn grew up in Freyburg, later moving to Schulenburg. She attended Schulenburg High School where she loved to play basketball and tennis. She graduated on May 24, 1960. She met the love of her life, Eugene Hunger, and they were married on Oct. 21, 1962, at Zion Lutheran Church in Schulenburg. They raised two daughters, Brenda and Marsha, and a son, Darrell. Carolyn and Eugene loved to waltz across Texas, going to dances any time they could.

She worked at the La Grange Elementary School cafeteria for 38 years. Carolyn loved children and they also loved her! Even if the kids didn’t have lunch money, Mema would put money on their card, because she believed everyone should have a hot lunch. The kids affectionately called her Mema just like her grandchildren always did. When girls were not able to be a part of Little League, she and other ladies of the community started a girls softball league, where she coached both her daughters.

Carolyn lived an active and busy life. She was a member of Black Jack Church, and later at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. She loved puzzles, some needlework, quilting, gardening, canning, making homemade noodles, and collecting any type of Elvis memorabilia. She loved to cook and made sure her granddaughters knew how to cook her favorite recipes, especially chicken spaghetti and apple pie. When her granddaughters started to play softball, she loved going to watch every game they played, even travelling to Colorado. Her great-grandson plays T-ball, and she loved going to watch him play as well. She loved all sports, but she especially loved her ball games. Her granddaughters and great-grandsons always had a special place in her heart.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene Hunger; daughters, Brenda Ahlschlager and husband Dennis, and Marsha Pietsch and husband Larry, all of La Grange; son, Darrell Hunger of La Grange; brother, Harold Schuetze and wife Melba; grandchildren, Brittni Keilers and husband Arlin Lee, and Brianna Janda and husband Ryan; great-grandchildren, Camden and Calin Keilers; sister-in-law, Peggy Hunger; and nephew, Heath Hunger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Olga (Ohnheiser) and Monroe Schuetze; and brother-in-law, Harold Hunger.
