Herbert Charles Pauler, 87, of Schulenburg, TX passed away on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023 at Lavaca County Medical Center in Halletsville, TX.

Herbert was born on Sept. 21, 1935 to Joseph and Pauline Pauler of Schulenburg. He attended school until the ninth grade and then went to work. He eventually joined the army and was stationed in Germany. He came to love the beautiful countryside which reminded him of his home in Texas. After returning to Texas, he met and fell in love with Georgia Kalmus Elenga, a widow lady with three daughters, Barbara, Donna and Rene. They married in 1966 and made a home for his new family in Houston where he worked as a machinist for Tom Wheatley Company. He later purchased his parents’ home in the St. John area and he and Georgia would travel there most weekends. He was very proud of his garden and loved watching the calves playing with each other. Most family gatherings were at the farm; he and Georgia hoped to retire there. God had other plans for Georgia, and took her Home on Aug. 4, 1998. Herbert eventually retired and moved to his farm in St. John. He loved making barbecue for his family and friends; good times and memories were shared by all.

Herbert is survived by his brother, Joe Pauler of Houston; sister, Hilda Henneke; step-daughter Barbara Bayer and son-in-law Allen Bayer; stepdaughter Donna Hartman; and son-in-law Charles Meyer. He is also survived by his grandson, Cris Bayer of Austin, and granddaughter, Cheri Demel of Schulenburg; and great-grandchildren Taylor, Dalton and Cooper Demel.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Pauline Pauler; sister Ida Klekar and brother-in-law Frank Klekar Jr.; his wife, Georgia; step-daughter Rene Meyer; and son-in-law Larry Hartman.

Herbert had a huge heart, a propensity for kindness, and an easy smile that disarmed those in his company.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023 at St. John Catholic Church, and he was buried at the St. John Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to St. John Catholic Church or the Schulenburg VFW.
