Howard L. Stoner, 62, of Schulenburg, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023 at 5:19 a.m. of cardiac arrest at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Officiating was Fr. Chase Goodman. Serving as pallbearers were his Schulenburg High 1978 classmates Keith Newman, Darryl Tietjen, Hector Martinez, Stanley Powe, Howard Staha and Frankie Joe Bohlmann. Named as honorary pallbearers were Larry Tidwell and Larry Brown.

Rosary was recited on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the funeral services, led by Knights of Columbus Council 2902.

Born at Portsmouth, Va. on July 16, 1960, he was the son of Robert and Maxine (Dieringer) Stoner. He attended Schulenburg ISD. On Feb. 16, 1991, Howard married Carmen Y. Wagner in Schulenburg. A lifelong resident of Fayette County, he worked as a carpenter. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2902.

At the time of his death, Howard was serving at Schulenburg City Alderman, Place 3, having been elected in May 2022.

Howard enjoyed coaching Little League and Junior Basketball. He also volunteered to coach football, basketball and softball at St. Rose when his kids were young. He looked forward to family vacations at the Frio River every summer.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen Stoner; two daughters, Tessa Oncken and husband Jason of Weimar, and Annie Stoner of Schulenburg; two sons, Clayton Stoner and wife Lyssa of Brenham, and Scott Stoner and wife Sammi of Schulenburg; two sisters, Dinah Hansen and husband Keith of Schulenburg, and Helen Krecmer and husband Mike of La Grange; and three grandsons.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert and Maxine Stoner; a son, Kyle Stoner; a sister, Betty Jurena; and a nephew, Bob Hansen.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
