Kassie Annell Riha was born on March 11, 1971, in Wharton, to loving parents Michael and Mary Riha of Weimar. On July 24, 2023, their hearts were filled with sorrow at the loss of their beloved daughter, sister and friend.

Kassie was a talented chef, a master in the kitchen, and an artist at heart. Her culinary expertise brought delight to countless individuals who had the pleasure of savoring her creations. Her passion for the culinary arts was matched only by her love for her dogs, whom she adored and cared for with a tender heart. Kassie’s warm and caring nature extended beyond her kitchen and her pets. She had a genuine love for people and was always fun to be around. Her infectious laughter, love for music, and generous nature touched many. Music held a special place in Kassie’s heart, and she found solace in a melody. Whether she was cooking up a storm in the kitchen, expressing herself through her artistic endeavors, or simply enjoying life’s moments, music was a constant companion in her life.

Kassie’s educational journey was a testament to her intellect. She earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Wharton County Junior College in 1991, followed by a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management, graduating Cum Laude in 1993. Continuing to pursue her passion for the culinary arts, she obtained an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Culinary Arts from the Art Institute of Houston in 1998.

Throughout her life, Kassie’s warm and caring nature endeared her to everyone she met. Her infectious smile and compassionate heart brought joy to those around her.

Kassie is survived by her parents, and her loving sister Kayla Riha of Austin, to whom she was not just a sibling but a big sister and guardian and the memories they created will forever be cherished. She also leaves behind her nephew, Joaquin Navarro, who she loved with a passion. She found every occasion to celebrate him.

Kassie was preceded in death by her grandparents, Edward and Dorothy Riha, Maria Castillo and Hipolito Zamora Sr., and her uncle and aunt, Tony and Janet Zamora.

Visitation was Friday, July 28, 2023 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus. A rosary followed at 7 p.m.

Funeral service to celebrate Kassie’s life was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 10 a.m., with Fr. Luke Prihoda officiating. Visitation at church was from 9 to 10 a.m. The family invites all who knew and loved her to join them in paying tribute to a remarkable woman who touched so many lives. Burial was in Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Hostyn.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Kassie.

“Although she has left us physically, Kassie’s spirit will continue to live on in our hearts. She will forever be remembered for her kindness, culinary prowess, artistic spirit, love for her dogs, and the joy she brought to our lives by her vibrant presence,” her family writes. “Rest in peace, dear Kassie, knowing that your love and laughter will be with us always.”
