Lazaro was born in Flatonia on March 29, 1940 to Joe and Josephine Cardenas. He attended school in Flatonia and served in the U.S. Marines where he was based at Dulles Air Force Base in Las Vegas. He was a sergeant and worked as an MP.

Lazaro worked as a welder/pipefitter and employers included Brown & Root, Phillips 66 and the Department of State. He loved to travel and his welding career allowed him to work on the Alaskan pipeline and the U.S. Embassy in Russia. When in Russia, he was made aware of an opportunity to work in security. He later went to Virginia for training and traveled the world working security at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world.

Lazaro had a witty sense of humor, enjoyed telling stories, and working on automobiles. He especially enjoyed welding and teaching others how to weld. He was currently mentoring his great-nephew Mason LeBlanc and family friend Brian Pena. He was always busy working on projects around the house or doing things for others. He would go regularly to his sister’s property in Burton, the Wertz ranch in Shiner, or visit family in Austin to help out with various repairs. His family and friends describe him as generous, always willing to help, and benevolent.

A memorial service and meal is set for Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the KC Hall in Schulenburg.
