Nov. 28, 1927 – May 07, 2023

Walter Lee Kram passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2023, in Schulenburg.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1927 to Walter and Erna (Hasse) Kram and was raised in the New Bielau area on the family farm. Walter enrolled at Texas A&M University but soon after enlisted in the Navy, where he was to be stationed in Key West, Florida. World War II ended before he was deployed. He returned to Weimar where he married Irene Kubesch on June 21, 1949. Walter was a United States postal carrier for 30 years. He was also a custom home-builder. Many of the homes in the surrounding areas have his signature on them. He told the new homeowners that their home came with a lifetime warranty; that warranty has now expired.

Walter was a retired fire chief of the Weimar Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department’s annual turkey and dressing dinner that everyone enjoys was his original idea for raising funds to purchase equipment for the department. Walter Lee was an avid domino player. Family gatherings always included several games of 42, which his children and grandchildren enjoyed with him. He was truly a dedicated family man. Many weekends were spent with his family and friends at the river. They were all known as the “River Rats.” In later years, Sunday afternoons were spent at the camphouse playing 42 with family and friends. He and Irene had a love of traveling and his children have very fond memories of those trips and that is a trait he passed on to his children.

Walter is survived by his son, Larry Kram of Houston; daughter, Donna Poehlmann and husband Mark of Brenham; son, Ken Kram and wife Sheila of Weimar; and daughter, Becky Roberts of Weimar. He was Popo to six grandsons, Neil Poehlmann and wife Marlene of Belton, Derek Poehlmann and wife Hilliary of Brenham, Tyler Poehlmann and wife Rebecca of Frisco, Bradley Roberts and wife Christy of Weimar, Brandon Roberts of Weimar, and Kasey Kram and wife Kallie of Granger, Indiana. Six great·grandchildren also survive – Emma and Izzy Poehlmann; Carter, Dylan and Ella Poehlmann; Caitlyn and Brinley Roberts; and Liam Kram.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene; son, Timothy Kram; sister, Lorene Poppe; and brother-in-law, Ben Poppe.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Weimar Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 792, Weimar, TX 78962, or a charity of one’s choice.
