PLCTM to host ‘Happy Music for Happy People’

Board members of the Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum, located at 275 West Fairgrounds Road, La Grange, in the Czech Village, invite members and the public to the second annual “Happy Music for Happy People” open house and event on Sunday, May 19. All are invited to view the continuing renovations and upgrades.

Chess, Hapkido classes slated at Weimar library

The Weimar Public Library will host a chess class for all ages – young and old – beginning Tuesday, May 28. The chess class will meet every Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

A drive-through-only benefit barbecue pork steak dinner for Jimmy and Cindy Carter will be held on Friday, May 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Schulenburg Hall, 405 South St.

The Schoener reunion is returning on Sunday, June 2 at the KC Hall in Schulenburg. Gathering will start at 11 a.m. and a meal will be served at noon. Families should bring enough food for themselves. Tea, coffee, plates, napkins, cups and plastic-ware will be provided.

Friends of the Schulenburg Public Library Book Sale Friends of the Schulenburg Public Library’s annual book sale is under way through Tuesday, May 21 during regular library hours. A large selection of new, old and ancient books will be available – children’s, young readers, fiction, history, crafts, etc.

A Historical Column From The Fayette County Historical Commission America’s infatuation with drive-in theaters began in 1933 with the first known theater established in New Jersey. Popularity would continue to grow with the opening of the Drive-In Short Reel Theatre in Galveston on July 5, 1934 – showing cartoons and short reels would be all the rage.

May yard of the month announced

The Schulenburg Garden Club has selected the home of Colton and Morgan Bubela, 511 Black St., as May yard of the month. A diverse planting of Liriope, Mexican Heather, Red Velvet Cannas, Texas Sage, Lantana, Vitex tree, Hawthorne Clara’s, Rosemary, Daniela Flax Lily and Purple Skullcap fill the wrap-around flowerbeds. It’s a beautiful addition to this growing community!

Kreische/Monument Hill set Bluff SchuetzenFest

Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites, located just south of La Grange off Highway 77, invite one and all to the third annual Bluff Schuetzen-Fest on Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This free family festival offers a full day of live music, traditional crafts and games, living history programs, tours of the Kreische Brewery ruins, food and drink, and more.
