Alex Seydler announces his candidacy for the Schulenburg ISD board of trustees by giving the following statement: My name is Alex Seydler, and I’m running for the Schulenburg ISD Board of Trustees. I’m 45 years old and a 1999 graduate of Weimar High School. Please don’t hold that against me, lol. I attended Texas Lutheran University in Seguin where I played golf and graduated with a social studies composite degree in secondary education. I currently work as a retail investor and also as a payroll manager for Seybro Door and Weatherstrip where I was the Vice President of Operations for many years. My wife, Bonnie, is a third grade teacher at Schulenburg Elementary and also serves as the varsity cheer sponsor. We will be married for 17 years this coming June and have three children, Seth 13, Simon 9, and Savannah 6. All of them attend Schulenburg ISD and will continue to do so. As the father of three young children, the future of our school district is extremely important to me. I firmly believe that I have the personal qualifications and experience necessary to be an effective board member. Engaging in public service has always been a huge desire of mine. I’ve been blessed to have had many opportunities to serve throughout the course of my life. From April 2016-February 2023, I was on the leadership team at Crossroads Christian Fellowship where I served as a deacon, treasurer, and elder. From May 2019-May 2023, I served on the Weimar City Council. From July 2015-March 2023, I was on the Weimar Golf Club Board of Directors where I served as vice president, treasurer, and president. From June 2021-December 2024, I served on the coaching staff at Sacred Heart Catholic School. I was the athletic director there from May 2023-December 2024 and was the head varsity football coach and head varsity boys basketball coach during my tenure. I also coached at the junior varsity and junior high levels and taught an elementary physical education class as well. I’m incredibly grateful and thankful for the time I had to be a part of all these organizations. They all helped me to grow positively as a human being in unique ways, and I learned so much about myself throughout each process. I believe the knowledge, wisdom, and experience that I have gained from all the aforementioned service opportunities would greatly assist me as a potential school board member. If elected, here are some personal principles that I would apply to the position. I believe you must be a visionary and always look at the overall big picture. My vision is for our school district to be the best it can possibly be in all facets, at all levels, at all campuses. I want our school to be the place where every family wants to send their child regardless if they are living in the district or looking to move into our district. I believe you must stand for and assist in establishing a daily standard of excellence. The consistent and continuous pursuit of excellence is paramount. I believe in teamwork and unselfishness. A board of any sort must work together well, there are times when you don’t get your way and that’s alright. You must continue to keep pushing forward together without matters ever becoming personal. I believe you must be extremely prepared and use great wisdom when making decisions on behalf of the district. Being a board member is serious business, it’s imperative to understand both the short term and long term ramifications of a decision that is made. I believe you must have financial discipline. Every single tax dollar must be spent wisely and efficiently to achieve the highest level of value possible. I have been in charge of budgets for a city, church, golf course, and athletic department. I have a sound, fundamental understanding of budgets and how they need to be properly managed. I believe in oversight, delegation, and the empowerment of individuals to do their jobs efficiently and effectively. Micromanagement is a non starter for me because it erodes faith and trust. I believe you must be connected to the educators that work at our school. It’s essential to listen to them and be in the know as to what is working and what is not. They are doing the daily grind everyday on the front lines and doing the best they can for our students every single day. Having been in education in an administrative role gives me a unique perspective because I can totally relate to what they go through on the daily. Being an educator is hard, hard work. It’s the most difficult and challenging thing I’ve ever tried to do. The days are extremely long, all of them. It’s a real roller coaster ride, the highs are high, and the lows are low. The highs can be unbelievably life-giving and rewarding. The lows can be extremely deflating and lead you to question why you are doing what you are doing. The people that wake up and make the decision to do this every day need love, support, and encouragement. They don’t do this to get rich so it’s essential that they know how much they are appreciated and valued in other ways. They spend day after day pouring everything they have into our students, and we need to pour into them so they aren’t left empty. That helps so much to keep their morale at a high level and students reap the benefits as a result. In closing, I’ll just say how much this means to me personally. My father-in-law was Coach David Husmann. He was a dear friend, and we had an extremely close relationship. He left a lasting legacy here, one that included integrity, discipline, work ethic, relationships, and great success. If I’m hired to this position, I promise to do my best to bring those attributes with me. Schulenburg is such a special place for our family, and we plan to make it our home for many years to come. I’ll do whatever I can to help move our school district forward. I hope to earn your vote in the coming days and weeks. Election day is May 2, please come out and exercise your right to vote.
