Responders learn how to do a rapid medical evaluation in a potentially hostile environment. They are taught to sweep for major bleeding, apply a tourniquet if needed, clear the airway, and place the victim in the recovery position.
Responders use combat gauze to pack wounds of various sizes. Both law enforcement officers and EMS are trained on lifesaving techniques in addition to applying tourniquets to their own arms and legs if injured. The goal is to have the tourniquet fully in place in under 20 seconds.
