Donald Edward Shofner passed away on Thursday, April 7 at 5 p.m. at his home in Schulenburg after battling liver cancer. He reached the age of 89 years, 3 months, 7 days.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Schulenburg, with Jerry Evins officiating. Named as pallbearers are James Laird, grandson; Joe Broussard, grandson-in-law; Indigo Bonds, great-grandson; and Jason Demel, grandson. Named as honorary pallbearers are Orion Broussard, greatgrandson; Rick Brewer, nephew; and Bill Brewer, nephew.
Born on Dec. 31, 1932 at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, he was the son of Elton and Emily (LaBauve) Shofner. He attended Pasadena High School and also took courses at the University of Houston. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54 during the Korean conflict. On Aug. 7, 1988, he married Marjorie Ann Bailey in Schulenburg. He lived in the Heights, then Pasadena, before moving to Schulenburg in 1988. He worked in the steel industry and A/C business, and also worked for HUD (Housing & Urban Development) and MHMR. During his lifetime, he was a member of the Catholic and Methodist churches. He was a member of the Pasadena Knights of Columbus and Schulenburg Lions Club.
He loved visiting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved animals and had many dogs and cats. He enjoyed coaching Little League with his son and helping his nephews learn to play baseball. He loved traveling, fishing in the bay and watching sports.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Shofner; two daughters, Debra Bonds of Pasadena, and Sheri Demel and husband Michael of Schulenburg; a son, Jim Laird and wife Brenda of Schulenburg; and two nephews, Bill Brewer and family of The Woodlands and Rick Brewer and family of San Antonio. His grandchildren are James Laird, wife Isis and their son Cruz of Deer Park; Courtney Broussard, husband Joe, and children Indigo, Orion and Avery Paige of La Porte; Jodi Demel, Eduardo Reyes and children Kyrroll and Angel of Schulenburg; and Jason Demel, wife Candice and children Greyson, Chance and Tessa of Cypress. Other great-grandchildren are Briahna Marsh of Schulenburg and Aedan Canyon Hidlebaugh of Pleasanton. Great-great-granddaughter is Presley Bonds of La Porte.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Elton and Emily Shofner; brothers, D.R., Kenneth and Jack; sister, Kathryn; grandson, Damon Bonds; aunt, Molly Guy; great-niece, Nancy Brewer; and great-nephew, Randall Robberts.
Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
