James C. Prihoda

James Charles Prihoda was born to William and Mary Srubar Prihoda on May 2, 1942, in La Grange, Texas. He was baptized at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Plum and graduated from La Grange ISD in 1961.

James married Carolyn Agnes Wick on Nov. 22, 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in High Hill, where they continued to be active members. In 1965, they settled in Schulenburg where James worked at various jobs before retiring from the Housing Authority for the City of Schulenburg in 2012. He was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, serving in the honor guard. He was also a member of the St. Joseph’s Society of High Hill and led the Litany of St. Joseph.

James is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn, and 16 children: Lisa Meysembourg (Mark), Michele Prihoda (Charlie Boldt), Theresa Janak (Bradley), Andrea Pope (Tim), Vivian Mendel (Greg), Gregory Prihoda (Shelley), Joanna Rogers (Paul), Juliana Prihoda (David Deen), Matthew Prihoda (Shantelle), Sara Southerland (Raul Olvera), Patrick Prihoda (Stephanie), Samuel Prihoda (Allison), Joseph Prihoda (Lisa), Marianna Measom (Russell), Carmela Tribble (Sean) and Anthony Prihoda (Veronica). He is also survived by 68 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Prihoda (Irene) and Raymond Prihoda (Sherri); one sister, Dorothy Bacak (Leslie); one sister-in-law, Joan Prihoda; three brothers-inlaw, Leo Wick (Barbara), Frank Wick Jr. (Jearline) and Basil Ermis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by daughter Monica Prihoda, his parents, parents-in-law Frank and Ottilia Wick, brother Johnny Prihoda, sister-inlaw Annie Ermis, and sons-in-law Michael Norrell and Richard Southerland.

James Charles Prihoda passed away on Friday, Dec. 23, 2022 at 12:52 a.m. at his home in High Hill at the age of 80 years, 7 months, 21 days. He died of cancer after a six-month illness.

Funeral Mass was held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in High HIll, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Officiating were Fr. Jasper Liggio, Deacon Jay Vocelka and Deacon Luke Prihoda. Pallbearers were grandsons Zachary Norrell, Barrett Meysembourg, Clayton Janak, Brice Pope, Nolan Mendel, Ty Ahrens, Dalton Wallace and Nickolas Prihoda. Named as honorary pallbearers were sons Gregory Prihoda, Matthew Prihoda, Patrick Prihoda, Samuel Prihoda, Joseph Prihoda and Anthony Prihoda, and all remaining grandsons.

Rosary was said at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 2 at the church, prior to the funeral Mass. Deacon Luke Prihoda led the rosary.
