Mary Ann Kokes

Mary Ann Fajkus Kokes, 89, passed away on Friday, July 7 in her home in Houston.

She was born Oct. 28, 1933 in Praha, daughter of the late Adolph Fajkus Sr. and Agnes(Bily) Fajkus. She was united in marriage with Joseph A. Kokes in Praha on May 6, 1957. She was a devoted housewife and mother to her three children. In addition to being a stay-athome Mom, she provided daycare to numerous children for 40 years. She was a member of KJZT Society No. 4 Praha for over 50 years and a parishioner of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Houston for 66 years.

She is survived by her son, Patrick Kokes of Houston; daughters, Sandra and Doris Kokes, both of Houston; grandchildren, Jason Kokes and his wife Holly of Cypress, Christine VanVeghel and her husband Robbie of Houston and Matthew Kokes and his wife Karen of Schulenburg; greatgrandchildren, Annabelle and Hunter Kokes, Tyler and Thomas VanVeghel and Jack and Charlee Kokes; sister, Georgia Wendel of Houston; and sisters-in-law, Rose Recek of La Grange, Libby Geistmann of Industry and Theresa Jozwiak of Brenham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Kokes; her parents, Adolph and Agnes Fajkus; her sisters, Agnes Grahmann, Lillian Mazoch and Judith Pavlica; brother, Adolph Fajkus Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Mary Kokes and Helen Machac.

Rosary was led by Deacon Jay Vocelka of High Hill on Tuesday, July 11 at Earthman Funeral Directors-Hunters Creek in Houston. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Praha, with Rev. Gabriel Maison of Praha officiating and Rev. Phil Lloyd of St. Theresa’s, Houston, assisting. Burial followed in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Praha. Pallbearers were grandsons Jason Kokes, Matthew Kokes and Robbie VanVeghel; and nephews, Wayne Wendel, Rodney Wendel, Michael Pavlica, Wayne Jozwiak and Kenneth Geistmann.

Funeral services were under the direction of Earthman Funeral Directors-Hunters Creek of Houston.
