Hi, there! My name is Julie Motomura, and I’m the superintendent of Schulenburg ISD. Beginning this week, every couple of weeks, I’ll share information about our district. We have so many great things going on every single day – I just want you to know about it!
•BOND – The 2023 Bond is divided into 2 propositions: A and B. Proposition A is for a new Performing Arts Center. This will act as our band hall, have an auditorium that seats 400 people and have a stage for performances. Not only is this part of the facility for the school, it will also be the perfect place to have community events – recitals, dance programs, pageants, etc. No longer will those events be forced to go out of the community to find a venue! When the committees met and the board voted on what they felt was important, they wanted to make sure they included a place that could serve not just the school, but the people in our town, and that’s exactly what this does. The side of the Performing Arts Center backs up to the stadium. This is where we’ll have girls AND boys’ dressing rooms and our weight room. This proposition also includes parking, drives and sidewalks, and renovations of existing ones. The Prop A total cost is $12,290,000. I’ll explain this more later, but passing this Proposition (and B) will not increase your taxes because of the tax rate compression (reduction) by the state, and the predicted passing of the additional $60K homestead exemption. And as always, taxes for those 65 and older are frozen if they’ve applied for the over 65 homestead exemption. Their taxes would go up $0.
•ACADEMICS – Our staff and administrators are working hard to ensure student learning is taking place on a daily basis. We’ve implemented a rigorous curriculum that will allow us to teach our kids what they need to know to be successful – not just on the test, but in life in general. Teachers have just finished up some testing with students to make sure they know exactly how much they know, so they can move forward in their teaching. We are excited to see how much our students grow this marking period.
