Lawrence “Larry” Veselka, 74, of Schulenburg, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024.
He born on June 25, 1950 to John and Pauline Veselka in Weimar. Larry attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and graduated from Bishop Forest High School in 1968. Larry worked at Frank’s Restaurant and as a ranch foreman for 60 years for Tilicek Farms.
Larry was an active community leader. He served in the Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years and served as the fire chief from 1997-2003. Larry served on the Schulenburg Junior Livestock Show board of directors and as president, and on the Farmers Co-op board of directors. In addition, he was president of the Schulenburg Young Farmers, director for the Schulenburg Horse & Dairy Show, director for the Schulenburg Festival Association, on the board of directors of the Rodeo Arena Project, and a member of the FFA Stock Show Committee and the Expo Center Committee. He was a member of the Texas National Guard for six years.
Larry proudly represented his community as a Schulenburg City Councilman for 12 years.
He served on the Schulenburg Public Library Committee and the Schulenburg EDC Committee, was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church board and was a lifetime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Larry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandsons, deer hunting and raising cattle.
Larry was married to Linda Labay Sept. 30, 1972 and resided in Schulenburg. Together they had two children, Chris Veselka and wife Courtney, and Carrie Brossmann and husband Drew, and two grandsons, Bo and Brody Brossmann.
In addition to his children and grandchildren. Larry is also survived by his brother Johnny Veselka and wife Mary, sisters-in-law and brothers inlaw Veronica and Dennis Muhlstein, Carol and Laurance Bludau, Duane and Jane Labay, Nancy and Russell Ross, Rose and Dennis Schoenfeld, Lana Labay, Doug Labay and Dolores Labay, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Polly Veselka, and a sister, Ann Marie, who died in infancy.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. Interment was in the St. Rose Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Schulenburg American Legion.
The family received friends beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, at Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home. The Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department memorial service began at 7 p.m. with the parish rosary afterward.
