Horns look to clinch playoff spot Friday

While other scenarios can come into play after games this Friday, the Shorthorns can assure themselves of a post-season berth with a win at home against Flatonia. Kickoff for the regular-season finale at David Husmann Memorial Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.

Weimar hosts Kenedy so there’s also the possibly of three-way ties behind first-place Ganado. At 4-2 in district, the Wildcats have the inside track on second place. The Lions go into their road game tied with Schulenburg at 3-2 while the Bulldogs come to Schulenburg at 2-3.

Before district play, Flatonia had wins over Louise (44-0), Sacred Heart (27-0), and Three Rivers (42-13) with a loss to Nixon-Smiley (47-17). In District 152A Division I, the ’Dogs defeated Bloomington (10-6) and Danbury (3212) but fell to Ganado (46-0), Kenedy (33-3), and Weimar (21-7).

Flatonia lost its featured running back, Koren Scott, to an injury after four games. Rushing leaders for the Bulldogs include No. 20 Adrian Anderson (100 carries, 556 yards), No. 7 Zayden Perez (63-378), No. 2 Caysen Perez (47-351), quarterback No. 1 Jaylon Anderson (18171), and No. 22 Nathan Aguillon (29-104). Through the air, Jaylon Anderson has completed 30-of-62 passes for 443 yards. Top receivers have been Zayden Perez (23 catches for 284 yards), No. 3 Lukas Gutierrez (5-76), and No. 0 Sean McKim (4-77). 

On defense, top tacklers for Flatonia through nine games this season include: Gutierrez, 113 (65 solo/48 assists); No. 33 Carmine Valdez, 97 (49 solo/48 assists); No. 51 Alex Castro, 80 (33 solo/47 assists); No. 56 Gabriel Aguillon, 63 (37 solo/26 assists); No. 4 Jose Maria Garcia, 58 (35 solo/23 assists); Zayden Perez, 50 (37 solo/13 assists); No. 6 Freddy Manzano, 47 (27 solo/20 assists); No. 10 Eli Kubesch, 45 (13 solo/32 assists); No. 54 Kevin Ramirez, 44 (17 solo/27 assists); and Jaylon Anderson, 40 (27 solo/13 assists). Under new head coach Matt Uzzell, the Bulldogs have already improved on their 1-9 season in 2024. Last year in Flatonia, the Horns posted a 63-24 win with 515 yards of total offense (302 rushing and 213 passing). The ’Dogs finished with 228 yards (144 on the ground and 84 through the air).
