LaVerne was born on March 14, 1928 in La Grange. She was the daughter of Herman and Erna (Holz) Citzler. She attended schools in La Grange and Schulenburg, and obtained honors in her high school as valedictorian and editor of the school yearbook. She believed in education and graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State University) in August of 1950, and married Lloyd T. Prilop (who she had known since the age of 6) on Sept. 3, 1950 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schulenburg. They had two daughters, Lana (Prilop) Yelich and Lissa (Prilop) Saadi.
In 1957, the family moved to San Antonio. When her daughters were in high school, LaVerne started teaching business courses at Churchill High School where she taught for 25 years. Although her beloved husband Lloyd died in 1987, she kept teaching until her retirement in 1993. After retirement, she had many opportunities for travel, going throughout the USA and making several trips to Germany where she connected with family members through her love of genealogy. Throughout her lifetime, she had a great love for music, playing the violin and singing in church choirs for many years. Her life was blessed with many wonderful and lifelong friends and a loving family. All who knew her described her as a kind and caring lady who always tried to help and care for others. She spent her life in service to God and those who needed support or comfort.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, and her brother.
Survivors include her daughters, Lana and husband Lou Yelich, and Lissa and husband,Ghassan Saadi. LaVerne had five beautiful grandchildren whom she cherished, Jennifer, James, Lauren, Alexander and Zayne, and was also blessed with six great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be on Thursday, June 24 at 10 a.m. at Stone Oak Presbyterian Church, 20024 Crescent Oaks, San Antonio. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Schulenburg at the City Cemetery.
