Aline Marie Mendel

Aline Marie Mendel of Schulenburg passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023 at age 88.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Rev. Chase Goodman officiating. Entombment took place in the St. Rose Mausoleum. Pallbearers were grandsons Alfredo Valenzuela, Vastine Valenzuela, Bryan Valenzuela, Steven Valenzuela, Kevin Valenzuela and Ethan Mendel. Named as honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Rachel Valenzuela, Hayley Mendel and Cameron Miller. Rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. at the church, prior to the funeral services.

Born in Schulenburg on April 18, 1934, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Gassmann Krischke. She attended St. Mary’s Church in High Hill and attended school there through the eighth grade. She lived at home and helped her family with all the farm work. She married Edwin Mendel on April 14, 1956 and farmed along with him until they moved to town. She was a wife, mother, homemaker, short order cook for a while, and delivered newspapers for 34½ years. She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Rose Altar Society, Schulenburg Garden Club and many other organizations that no longer exist.

She had many hobbies; she loved to quilt, embroider, bake and do lots of canning. She volunteered at the nursing home, helping the residents play bingo. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Survivors are daughters Mildred Valenzuela of Schulenburg and Miranda Mendel of Georgetown, and son Michael Mendel and his wife Michelle Werner-Mendel of Shiner. She has nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edwin, one sister, one brother and two great-grandchildren.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
