Charleen Ann Kallus, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren. She was 80 years old.
Charleen was born on May 17, 1945, in Schulenburg to Charlie and Cleo Beyer. She was the youngest of two daughters. She spent her early years in Schulenburg, where she attended St. Rose Catholic School and Bishop Forest High School, graduating in 1963. Shortly after, Charleen moved to Houston, where she began working as a secretary and met the love of her life, John “Johnny” Kallus. The two married in June of 1966 and began building a beautiful life together. They welcomed their first child, John Mark, followed by daughter Jill Cherese three years later. In 1973, the family settled in Columbus, where Charleen truly found her calling as a faithful wife and homemaker. Known for her deep love of children, Charleen not only raised her own with unwavering devotion but also cared for many others in the community. In 1976, their family was completed with the birth of their second daughter, Jacquelyn Renee.
While raising her children, Charleen worked at various businesses in the Columbus area and spent the majority of her career as a medical records clerk at Four Oaks Medical Clinic. She was a constant and loving presence in her children’s lives, never missing a school event or activity. She also volunteered countless hours at St. Anthony’s Catholic School and Church, living out her strong faith and generous spirit daily. In 1999, Charleen lost her beloved Johnny to cancer. She retired shortly thereafter and embraced her next cherished role – becoming a grandmother. Her seven grandchildren quickly became the center of her world. Known lovingly as “Naana,” Charleen poured her heart into spoiling, loving and supporting each of them. Her time with them was filled with joy, laughter and warmth.
Charleen had a passion for quilting, sewing, cooking, gardening and traveling. In addition, her home was always warm and welcoming as she enjoyed filling it with all things daisies, butterflies and above all, angels. She also deeply valued the time she spent with her many dear friends. She was always up for a fun adventure! Her servant’s heart was evident in everything she did. She dedicated thousands of hours volunteering with the Columbus Community Hospital Auxiliary and remained an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America for many years. It was very clear she was the happiest when she was helping those around her.
In 2024, Charleen faced a series of health challenges, including multiple strokes, which led to her move to an assisted living facility in Katy. There, she quickly became a favorite among the staff, who adored her loving and witty personality. Even in her final year, she remained strong, gracious and full of life.
Charleen was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Cleo Beyer, and her husband, John Kallus. She is survived by her three children: John (Sharon) Kallus, Jill Guzman, and Jacky (Tyson) King; her seven grandchildren: Jordyn and Raeghan Guzman, and Kadyn, Addyson, Hadley, Brynlee and Jaxon King; her sister, Florine Bohac; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.
Charleen’s legacy of faith, love, kindness, and selflessness will continue to inspire all who knew her. Everyone knows Naana had a sweet tooth, a love for joyrides, and never missed a day visiting the post office! If heaven has ice cream and stamps, she’s already in her happy place!
A rosary and funeral will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Columbus,. Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 10 am. A private family graveside service will be held immediately after at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery.
