Eugene was born in La Grange on April 19, 1938. He was the son of the late August and Olga (Albrecht) Hunger. He attended La Grange High School where he graduated on May 21, 1956. He met the love of his life, Carolyn Schuetze, and they were married on Oct. 21, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church in Schulenburg. They raised two daughters, Brenda and Marsha, and a son, Darrell. Eugene and Carolyn loved to waltz across Texas, going to dances any time they could.

He joined the U.S. Army on May 9, 1958, and served as a cook. After his release from active duty, on Nov. 17, 1958, he went to serve in the Army Reserve until he was honorably discharged on May 8, 1964. He was self-employed doing custom farm work, such as building fences and baling hay.

Eugene was a member of Black Jack Church, and later St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Grange. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and playing 42 dominoes. Eugene and Carolyn would also do catering with a group of friends for weddings and other special occasions. Within the past few years, he could always be found working in his word search book. His granddaughters and great-grandsons always had a special place in his heart.
