Josef “Leroy” Schindler of Schulenburg passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at 8:40 p.m. at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange after a 2-week illness. He reached the age of 90 years, 9 months, 2 days.

The funeral was held on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Fr. Felix Twumasi officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Daniel Cernoch, Kyle Schindler, L.J. Schindler, Austin Lebeda, Logan Lebeda and George Reyes. Named as honorary pallbearers were grandchildren Nicholas Cernoch, Michelle Nuosce, Melanie Farrar, Diane Kasparek, Kyle Schindler, Katherine Reyes, L.J. Schindler, James Schindler, Austin Lebeda and Logan Lebeda.

Rosary was led by the Knights of Columbus on Thursday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Born in Schulenburg on Sept. 19, 1929, he was the son of Alfred J. and Rosie (Kasper) Schindler. He attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School through the eighth grade, but did not go to high school. On Sept. 10, 1956, he married Rosemary Kunz at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. A lifelong resident of Schulenburg, he was a rancher and farmer. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the St. Rose of Lima parish board and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two daughters, Rose Ann Cernoch and husband Daniel of La Grange, and JoAnn Lebeda and husband Bruce of Schulenburg; three sons, Joseph “Joe” Schindler and wife Tanya, Michael “Mike” Schindler and wife Debbie, and John Schindler and wife Misty, all of Schulenburg; two brothers, Francis “Frank” Schindler and wife Jerlyn of Schulenburg, and Daniel “Doc” Schindler and wife Hilda of San Antonio; sister-in-law, Kathleen Schindler of Columbus; and 10 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Alfred and Rose Schindler; wife, Rosemary Kunz Schindler; a brother, Alfred Schindler; a sister, Marie Skarke; and a grandson, Chris Schindler.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that donations in his honor be made to St. Rose Catholic School or the Schulenburg FFA.
