The award-winning Czech comedy drama “Buko” will make its Flatonia and Fayette County premiere on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Lyric Theater in Flatonia.
Presented by Czech That Film Texas, an annual series of contemporary Czech films screened around the Lone Star State, “Buko” follows 60-something Jarmila (Anna Cónová) after she and her husband Václav (Miroslav Krobot) move from Prague to the countryside to spend their last years. Upon Václav’s unfortunate passing, Jarmila receives a surprise as dictated in his last will: an old circus horse named Buko she is now supposed to take care of. And with it, Jarmila starts a new phase of her life.
Directed by veteran Czech helmer Alice Nellis, the film was well received recently in Dallas and Austin and has been a top box office hit in the Czech lands, premiering at the summer’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film also garnered the Czech Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Martha Issová, a fan favorite in the Czech Republic, in her role as Tereza, an autistic young woman.
