John Landa, the “Schulenbirder,” sent this photo of a black-bellied whistling duck, which he says was hanging out at his pond off Steiber Road for most of the Memorial Day weekend. He says that this species is fairly common to this area this time of year.

The Gardenia E. JanssenAnimal Shelter is holding a microchip promotion during May, offering microchips for $20 each. A microchip is the only permanent form of identification for a pet. Unlike collars and tags that get lost, microchips last for the lifetime of a pet.
