Less than minute after a special teams miscue helped the Shorthorns take the lead late in the fourth quarter, Weimar responded with game-winning plays to leave David Husmann Memorial Stadium with a 30-23 victory last Friday.
Schulenburg took advantage of a low Weimar punt that went for minus-23 yards after it caromed up and backward off the backside of a Wildcat blocker. At the 24, Aaron Janecek threw a strike on first down to Byron Johnson over the middle for the touchdown. Brycen Schramek’s extra-point kick put the Horns up 23-22 with 1:39 left.
Special teams then aided Weimar’s dramatic win as Zach Norrell returned the kickoff 44 yards to the Schulenburg 46. Facing third and 10 after two incomplete passes, Wildcat quarterback Huxton Kloesel scrambled for 16 yards. Jerron Fisher got out of bounds on a 6-yard run before Dalton Turlington was left uncovered downfield. Kloesel’s pass found its mark for the go-ahead, 24-yard score.
