LCRA awards grant to Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Dept.

A$50,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority will help the Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department outfit a recently purchased fire truck with new, more effective rescue tools. The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $53,593 in matching funds from the department, will pay for battery-powered extrication tools, including a cutter, spreader and ram that help first responders free people from wrecked vehicles or other places they cannot get out of on their own.

Hundreds of Lower Colorado RiverAuthority employees picked up paint brushes, shovels and more to volunteer on dozens of community projects throughout Texas during LCRA’s annual day of service, Steps Forward Day, held this year on April 12.

Bert & Bill’s to offer taxi, cleaning services

The start of a new, local business – Bert & Bill’s, LLC – was introduced with a gathering at Wolters Park Pavilion on Saturday, April 27. Shown above are (from left) co-owner Clarisse Berry, owner Dr. Virginia Glass Berry, and manager Garvin Burley. The event included free hot dogs and refreshments as well as chances to win prizes through a drawing that will be held on May 17. Dr. Berry named the business for her late parents and it’s dedicated to them. Her dad owned Club 957 in Schulenburg.

Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek reports that during the week of April 21-27, officers responded to 73 calls for service and three reportable incidents were investigated as follows: •April 21 – Officer Powe responded to the 100th block of Huser Blvd. in reference to assault/ family violence and interfering with a request for emergency assistance.

High-end electrical users could strain grid The growth of industrial-scale users of power could strain the Texas power grid, ERCOT’s chief announced last week. The Dallas Morning News reported Pablo Vegas, the agency’s CEO, said bitcoin miners and artificial intelligence data centers going in across the state, as well as industrial growth in the Permian Basin, could create the need for a massive buildup of power transmission lines in the future.

Colorado Valley explains plan for expanding fiber internet

Colorado Valley Communications announces that high-speed fiber internet is now available in the Schulenburg area as part of a five-year construction project to expand its fiber network. The goal of the project is to put fiber in most of the rural areas surrounding Schulenburg, La Grange, Weimar and Fayetteville.
