County’s property insurance increases significantly for 2023

Fayette County Auditor Cindy Havelka reported that this year’s property insurance bill would be nearly $20,000 higher at the Commissioners Court meeting on Thursday, May 25. In 2022, the County paid $57,435 and it was due for a reevaluation of the property insurance, Havelka said.

State unemployment rate says steady in April

The seasonally-adjusted civilian labor force increased by 62,184 to reach a series-high 14,960,308 people in April while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.0 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. Fayette County’s rate dropped one-tenth of a percent from March to 3.4.

Otto, McBride earn top honors in SHS Class of 2023

Schulenburg ISD announced Tamara Otto and Kaz McBride as its top two graduates for the Class of 2023 earlier this month at the Senior Scholarship Banquet. Summaries of their years in high school that each provided follow.

With changes made since last month, an amendment to Schulenburg’s Code of Ordinances was unanimously enacted by the City Council at last week’s meeting. In Chapter 14, the residential “R-5” district was renamed from “Manufactured Home” to Manufactured Home and Alternative Residential Housing.

$385,000 worth of cocaine seized

A total of 11 kilos of suspected cocaine with a street value of $385,000 was seized during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Engle on Tuesday, May 16, according to Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek. Sheriff Korenek reported that around 7:50 a.m.
