Court proposes same tax rate, public hearing scheduled for Aug. 26

The Fayette County Commissioners Court proposed a property tax rate of $0.464 per $100 valuation at its regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 12. While the proposed rate would be the same as the one enacted in 2019, the County will collect more revenue due to an increase in property appraisals.

The Fernando Juarez family watched helplessly as members of the Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department battle the blaze that engulfed their home at 1207 Kessler Ave. early Tuesday morning, Aug. 10. Along with their pet dog, all three got out without injury.

Motorcycle mishap on I-10 claims life

A motorcyclist lost her life after getting forced off the road in an accident Friday night, Aug. 6 on Interstate 10 just west of the Engle exit. According to the Department of Public Safety report, 31-year-old Mallory Brooke Baskins of Conroe died at the scene.

The lessons that Florence Hertel Farek learned at a two-room country school in Freyburg, Texas, still make her smile. In the 1930s, the Schulenburg, Texas, resident, who will turn 95 in August, lived on a farm in the rural South Central Texas community.
