Cynthia Gassmann Barton, age 84, of Schulenburg, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 4, while surrounded by her family. She will be deeply missed but they take comfort in the fact that she is no longer suffering and is reunited with her loved ones.
Born Cynthia Joan Staha in Hallettsville on Oct 16, 1940, she grew up in the Schulenburg area where she helped on the family farm. She graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1959. Soon after, she met and married Erwin Gassmann on Aug 6, 1960, and they relocated to Bellaire. They welcomed two sons, Daryl Anthony and Dwayne Allan. Cynthia worked for Montgomery Ward for 29 years. After retirement, she and Erwin returned to their roots in Schulenburg. After Erwin’s death in 2004, she remained in Schulenburg and years later she reunited with her high school friend, Johnny Barton. They were married on April 11, 2012. They enjoyed 13 years of listening and dancing to polka music, traveling was their passion, and they even made it to Alaska and Hawaii. They lived life to the fullest and also enjoyed retirement, spending time with their large group of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Erwin Gassmann, and her parents, Albert and Olga (Barecky) Staha.
Cynthia is survived by her loving husband, Johnny Barton; her sons Daryl Gassmann (Janet) of Conroe, and Dwayne Gassmann (Patricia) of Missouri City; and bonus step-children, Renee Dworaczyk, Roger Barton (Julia) and Beverly Smith (Ken). She was blessed with 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; her loving sisters, Jeanette Staha Chaires (Will) and Sandra Staha Moore; along with various nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in High Hill on Thursday, May 8 with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by the rosary and an 11 a.m. Mass. Lunch was served at the church hall after the graveside service.
All arrangements were handled through Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church High Hill Restoration Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
