Vernon Henry Berger died on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at the age of 91. He was born on Dec. 17, 1934, in Schulenburg to Hilda (Lobpries) Berger and Henry Berger. He had one brother, Wilbert. Growing up on a farm, Vernon worked hard alongside his family and truly loved that way of life. In 1957, he joined the U.S. Army and served for two years in Germany. He was later recalled to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961 and was stationed at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.
Vernon joined the Houston Police Department in 1959 while attending the University of Houston. Over the course of his distinguished career, he rose through the ranks from patrol officer to detective, then to lieutenant and captain, retiring after 38 years of dedicated service. Vernon was also a devoted member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Retired Police Association.
He met the love of his life, Dorothy Janecka, and they were married on May 23, 1965. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three daughters – Stephanie, Jennifer and Keri. Their marriage was filled with love and devotion, and they were blessed to celebrate 61 wonderful years together.
Family meant everything to Vernon. He was deeply devoted to his beloved wife, Dorothy, and immensely proud of his daughters. His greatest joy was his eight grandchildren – Connor, Caroline, Riley, Shannon, Jacob, Catherine, Ethan and Luke –whom he adored and cherished beyond measure. Vernon was a deeply devout and faithful man who found strength in his quiet, powerful prayers. He believed that faith was most meaningful when it was personal and sincere, and he lived each day true to himself and his values.
Vernon had a deep love for the outdoors, with a particular passion for hiking the mountains of Colorado. He and his family spent countless summer vacations exploring National Parks and skiing during the winter months. After retiring, Vernon and Dorothy traveled extensively, visiting countries across Europe, exploring Central America, touring the United States and enjoying numerous cruises. He also treasured time at his country ranch in Schulenburg, where a long day on the tractor would end perfectly with a moment of relaxation on the porch, a cold Shiner beer in hand, and a scoop of homemade Blue Bell vanilla ice cream.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; and his three daughters, Stephanie Duffy and her husband, Sean; Jennifer Singletary and her husband, Jeff; and Keri Dolch and her husband, Bryan. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Connor, Riley and Shannon Duffy; Caroline and Catherine Singletary; and Jacob, Ethan and Luke Dolch. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jerry Janecka and his wife, Ann; sisters-in-law, Doris Janecka, Ronnie Janecka and Lillian Hilscher; brother-in-law, Ed Janecka and his wife, Margie; and his niece, Kim Anders and her husband, Mark.
