James Brossmann

James Brossmann of Schulenburg passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at age 81 years, 7 months, 9 days.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with entombment in the St. Rose Mausoleum. Fr. Scott Hill officiated. Pallbearers were grandsons Clayton Brossmann and Christopher Redding; and nephews Ricky Kristynik, Kyle Kristynik, Ryan Kristynik, John Dujka, Mark Dujka and Nathan Redman. Named as honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Cassie Redding, April Brossmann, Brooke Redding and Sarah Pruett; and nephews Brant Redman and Barett Redman.

Rosary was said at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the church, led by the Schulenburg Knights of Columbus.

Born at St. John on Jan. 30, 1940, he was the son of Herman and Clara Brossmann. James attended school in St. John and graduated from Schulenburg High School. After graduating, he worked at Stanzel Airplane Factory and for Jack Klesel. He entered the Army on March 6, 1962. After being discharged from the Army in 1964, he remained in the Army Reserves until March 5, 1968. He went to work at Armco/Contech and remained there for 43 years until retiring. Never being able to sit still, he then accepted a part-time job at the City of Schulenburg.

He married his sweetheart, Rita Kana, on May 30, 1965, and they had three children, Sheila, Scott and Roxann.

He was a member of many organizations, including being a founding member of the South Texas Wheel Spinners & Crank Twisters. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, Knights of Columbus Council 2902 and Shorthorns Forever Association. He also volunteered at the Schulenburg Area Food Pantry and was a retired firefighter for the Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department. Awards won were SVFD Firefighter of the Year in 1990, Masonic Lodge Community Builder in 2009, American Legion Legionnaire of the Year in 2014, SHS Booster Club Fan of the Year for 2014-15 and KC Family of the Year in 2017. He made all the sporting events of his kids and grandkids at St. Rose School and Schulenburg ISD. It didn’t matter if it was football, volleyball, basketball, track or swim meets, his organizations took second place to these events.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Brossmann of Schulenburg, and Roxann Brossmann Redding and husband Darren of Hostyn; a son, Scott Brossmann and wife Cheryl of St. John; a sister, Mary Lou Dujka of East Bernard; a sister-in-law, Janie Kristynik of Garwood; and five grandchildren, Christopher Redding, Cassie Redding, Brooke Redding, Clayton Brossmann and April Brossmann.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Rita; parents, Herman and Clara Brossmann; and his in-laws, Emil and Ella Kana, Charles and Delores Brossmann, Willie Dujka, Emil and Diane Kana, and Bernard Kristynik.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
