Alice Hollas

ALICE HOLLAS

Alice Marie (Bayer) Hollas was born Feb. 15, 1939 in Ammannsville to Lad and Lillie Bayer. She attended school in Ammannsville through eighth grade and attended high school in Schulenburg.

Alice met a German boy named Robert Hollas from High Hill and they married Oct. 16, 1955. They tackled life’s challenges together for almost 70 years. They moved to Pasadena, where they welcomed two sons, Bobby and Jimmy, and then moved to Houston where they welcomed daughter Cindy and son Andy.

Alice was a stay-at-home mom until the youngest started school. She held several secretarial jobs at different insurance companies including American General, Lambert, and Chesapeake until 1985, when she began work for Exxon in the accounting department and continued for 15 years until her retirement. Alice never met a stranger and would carry on a conversation with anyone. At the grocery store, she would strike up a conversation like the person was a friend and afterward the kids would ask “who was that?” and her reply would be “I don’t know.” Alice could be a little sassy and flirty at times but was loved by everyone she met. Growing up on the farm, Alice learned to can pickles and made the best homemade bread around. She was a great cook and could make a pound of ground meat feed the whole family. Alice was like a second mom to her younger brother Dan who lived with the family in Houston for a short time and who she taught to wash clothes and iron a shirt.

Alice loved watching her kids play sports and never missed a game, which led her to enjoy the Houston Astros where her favorite player was Jose Altuve. Her love of music included polkas, Elvis Presley and George Strait whom she would travel all around Texas to watch.

Alice is survived by her husband Robert Hollas and their children Cindy and Jimmy Carter of Schulenburg, Bobby and Kathy Hollas of Spring, Jimmy and Donna Hollas of Houston, and Andy and Melissa Hollas of Laguna Hills, California; grandchildren Wes and Amy Hollas of Kingwood, Matt and Dannie Hollas of Houston, Katie and Dustin Adams of Tomball, Gretchen Hollas of Houston, Cody and Jill Carter of Hitchcock, James Hollas of Houston, Samantha and Alex Lara of Tomball, Josef and Sierra Hollas of Hockley, Kristen and Chase Harelson of Prairieville, La. and Jennifer Hollas of Baton Rouge, La.; great-grandchildren Adam, Avery, Skylar and Kaden Hollas, Ainsley and Kassidy Adams, and Sophia Lara and Justin Williams; and brother Daniel and wife Carol Bayer of Humble.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Lad and Lillie Bayer and brother, Erwin (E.J.) Bayer.
