Eugene Edward Schramek of Schulenburg passed away on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026 at age 89.
Eugene was born June 17, 1936 to William and Margaret (Klesel) Schramek. He attended St. Rose Catholic School, Schulenburg High School (1950-54) and Draughon Business College. On Sept. 21, 1957, he married Lorene Delores Wick of Weimar. Eugene served in the United States Air Force (Air National Guard) from 1958-64. He held various jobs during his career including Gillespie Motor Company in San Antonio, Raymond Pearson Ford in Houston, National Life Insurance Co. in Houston, United States Postal Service in Houston and eventually retiring in 1992 from the United States Postal Service as Postmaster in Schulenburg. He also worked at Schulenburg Printing & Office Supplies and the Lone Star Beer distributorship in Schulenburg. Later in life, he was a resident at College Place Assisted Living and Regency Nursing Center.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lorene Schramek; daughter Sandy Chaloupka and husband Robert; daughter Donna Bonneau and husband Michael; daughter Lisa Ehrig and husband Ernest “Bubba”; grandchildren Hayley Mendel and husband Avery Dora, Ethan Mendel and wife Ashton, Amber Bonneau and fiance Joseph, Travis Bonneau and Jase Ehrig and wife Christal; great-grandchildren Jayda, Tinsley, Henry, Lexi, Emery and Julia; as well as numerous other extended family members.
Eugene was a member of various organizations including Knights of Columbus honorary member, Lions Club, Northwest San Jacinto High Rollers Motorcycle Cub, St. Mary’s Parish board, Engle Farmers Mutual Insurance board and American Legion Post 143.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in High Hill. Officiating was Fr. Luke Prihoda. Interment followed in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in High Hill with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 143. Pallbearers were Dwayne Wick, Christopher Wick, Russell Wick, Larry Berger, Ronnie Schramek and Barrett Harvey. Also participating in the service were Willy Schmidt, Francis Ripper, David Hollas and Denise Trojacek.
Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
