James Ferdinand “Porkchop” Meyer of Schulenburg passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 at 12:04 a.m. at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin, exactly two days prior to his 70th birthday. He reached the age of 69 years, 11 months, 29 days, and had been ill for approximately three months.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Fr. Isaac Maunger officiated. Organist was Nicole Michalke and vocalist was Sarah Olle. Pallbearers were nephews Jason Koopmann of Weimar, William Roy “Bill” Meyer II of Leander, Kevin Karstedt of La Grange and Dustin Meyer of Schulenburg; great-nephew Nicholas “Nick” Koopmann of Weimar; and family friend David “Chico” Kalmus of Schulenburg. Named as honorary pallbearer was great-nephew K.J. Karstedt of La Grange.
Visitation was held on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the church, with rosary at 9:30 a.m. led by Kenneth Berger (family friend).
Born on Jan. 20, 1952 at the family home near Schulenburg, he was the son of Ferdinand and Ella (Blaschke) Meyer. He attended Schulenburg ISD. He was a lifelong resident of Fayette County, living on the homestead on East County Line Road. He was retired at the time of his death and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Cynthia (Malinek) Meyer of Schulenburg; a brother, Harvey Joe Meyer and wife Denise (Korenek) Meyer of Schulenburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ferdinand Meyer; mother, Ella (Blaschke) Meyer; brother, William Roy Meyer; sister, Irene Ella (Meyer) Koopmann; brother-in-law, Werner “Johnny” Koopmann Jr.; two nephews, Darrell Koopmann and Werner Koopmann III; and a niece, Louise Koopmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guadalupe Region Hospice Services in Seguin, Hospice of South Texas, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church or a charity of one’s choice.
Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
