Leo Albert Hollas, 76, passed away at his home in Houston on Sunday, July 19, 2020. He died after battling lung cancer for a month.

The funeral was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Houston on Saturday, July 25 at 9:30 a.m., with Msgr. Jim Anderson officiating. Interment took place in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Schulenburg at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers were grandsons Jacob Hollas, Luke Hollas, Nicholas Hollas, Clayton Malkowsky, Travis Malkowsky and Austin Malkowsky.

Born at High Hill on Sept. 14, 1943, he was the son of Hugo Sr. and Pauline (Schmidt) Hollas. He attended Bishop Forest High School and the University of Houston. On June 27, 1964, he married Rose Mensik at St. Rose Church in Schulenburg. He worked as a carpenter for 45 years and lived in Houston from 1964 until his death. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and St. Rose-Houston Men’s Club. Leo was an avid sports fan and played on one team or another into his 50s. He loved his country home, working on his tractor, and was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. Above all, Leo loved his God and his family and took great pride in attending as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s games and programs as possible.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Mensik Hollas; a daughter Jane Malkowsky and husband John of Houston; three sons, Chuck Hollas and wife Karen of Pearland, Greg Hollas and wife Martha of Houston, and Brad Hollas and wife Sarah of Houston; five brothers, Alvin Hollas of Houston, Armand Hollas of High Hill, Robert Hollas of Schulenburg, Winfred Hollas of Rosenberg and Richard Hollas of Katy; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hugo Hollas Jr. Pat H. Foley of Houston was in charge of arrangements.
