Mildred Zatopek

Mildred Trlica Zatopek, 100, of Schulenburg, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.

She was born on Sept. 1, 1921, to John and Angelina Krause Trlica on a farm in Moravia. She married Joe Zatopek on Sept. 5, 1939, at Ascension of our Lord Catholic Church, and they farmed in Moravia until the mid-1950s when the extreme drought forced them to move to Houston. While residing in Houston, she worked as a professional seamstress at Trudy’s Style Shop until retiring.

Upon the passing of Joe, Mildred moved back to the family homestead in Moravia where she grew up. She dearly loved play ing pool and listening to polka music, gardening, crossword puzzles, playing dominoes and bingo. Above all, she loved going to the local dances and dancing to polka music. At one of these dances, she met Charlie Hajek. Several years later they married and spent 16 years together.

Mildred liked to bake kolaches, and at Christmas she especially enjoyed making her apple strudels for family members as gifts. She adored her granddaughters and always enjoyed spending time with them. Throughout her long life, she enjoyed going to different events, shopping and especially going to church and parish picnics with her best friend Almeda Poth. Mildred spent her later years in life at the Regency Nursing Home in Schulenburg, where she was happy, and enjoyed playing dominoes and bingo with the other residents. She bragged on the great food and how well she was taken care of by the staff.

Mildred is survived by two sons, Alan Zatopek and Everett Zatopek and wife Mary Jane; and two grandchildren, Kristina and Lisa Zatopek.

Mildred was preceded in death by her first husband Joe Zatopek, second husband Charles Hajek, parents and son Larry Zatopek.

Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, at Ascension of our Lord Catholic Church of Moravia. Visitation started at 10 a.m. with Rosary starting at 10:30 a.m. Officiant was Msgr. John Peters. Burial took place in Ascension of our Lord Catholic Cemetery.
