Milton Joseph Shimek of Schulenburg passed away on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022 at Oak Manor Nursing Center in Flatonia at age 85.

Funeral services were held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., followed by entombment in the St. Rose Mausoleum. Pallbearers were nephews Stanley Shimek, Marty Shimek, Donald Shimek, Greg Shimek, Mark Shimek, David Kocich, Greg Langhamer and Leon John Langhamer.

Parish and Knights of Columbus rosary was recited at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, at the church.

Born on Oct. 6, 1936, he was the son of Louis and Frances (Kutac) Shimek. He attended Moravia School for grades 1-8 and Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Hallettsville for grades 9-12. On Oct. 19, 1958, he married Helen Marie Klesel at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He lived in Lavaca County in his younger years and then moved to Fayette County. He worked as a plumber and electrician at Leon’s Electric & Plumbing for 50 years. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He became “a little famous” when he was pictured on the Victoria Bank & Trust calendar with his chickens and then again with his cows. He loved driving tractors, making hay and growing his garden. He loved giving vegetables to the Schulenburg Area Food Pantry and surprising friends with them.

Survivors include his wife Helen; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Dawn Shimek of Schulenburg; two sisters-in-law, Joan Shimek of Houston and Carol Shimek of San Antonio; and a brother and sister-in-law, Roman and Gertie Shimek of Hallettsville.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Alan Shimek; three brothers, Wence, George and Joe; and four sisters, Agatha, Dorothy, Judy and Martha.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
