Virginia “Ginger” Ann Stanzel Bosl, 67, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
Ginger was born April 2, 1955, in Weimar, to Jane Maroney Stanzel and Reinhart “Bull” Stanzel. As a child, Ginger attended St. Rose Catholic School and graduated from Bishop Forest High School in 1973. She received her B.S. in education from Southwest Texas State University. She received her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in reading from the University of Houston at Victoria.
She married her friend and soulmate, Andy Bosl, on June 5, 1977, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. They enjoyed almost 46 years of reading, golfing, traveling, socializing with friends, and gardening together. Ginger’s collections included angels, Santa Claus figures, napkin rings, and two walls of family photos. She took great pride in her needlework and enjoyed playing Bunco with retired educators. She greatly loved her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and greatnephews, always remembering them on their birthdays and holidays with unique gifts and special books.
Ginger taught for 36 years at Weimar ISD in the second and third grades. She retired in 2013 but continued to be employed as a substitute teacher. At Schulenburg ISD she served as a long-term sub to one of her former student teachers, and as an academic interventionist. This included working with students for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) with other teachers in the school. Ginger also enjoyed tutoring after her retirement. She was dedicated to teaching and being a positive influence on all of her students. She cherished the “hugs” she gave and received from her students even as they became adults. She was admired and appreciated by not only her students but also her fellow teachers and the community. According to a friend and fellow teacher, “She was the best teacher I ever worked with, and she made me a better teacher. It was my privilege and pleasure to have known her and called her my friend!” Also, a friend commented that her smile was always contagious!
Ginger served as president of the county Texas State Teachers Association, coordinator of Read Across America at Weimar Elementary, sponsor of the University Interscholastic League storytelling, and a judge of various subjects for the University Interscholastic League competition.
She was an avid volunteer and participated in helping numerous professional organizations and community nonprofits. Her work with the Stanzel Family Foundation began in 1997 serving as board secretary and governance committee chair. She was instrumental in launching the nextgeneration team and the program/communication team, establishing the Dale Kern Memorial Scholarship for Camp Invention and volunteered for ‘Kids on the Land’ in Jacksboro, Texas. As a niece of Victor and Joe Stanzel, her commitment to the founders and enthusiasm for their mission led to her dedication and years of hard work with the Stanzel Family Foundation and Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum.
In her community activities, she was a founding member of the Youth Activity Community Health Team which led to establishing the Healthy Community Initiative. She was also influential in the formation of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Champion Valley where she served as board secretary and later president. For the Schulenburg/Weimar area Parents As Teachers Program, she served on the advisory board and was chairman of the auction fundraising committee for over 10 years. Ginger was such a giving person and tirelessly led the committee. This year, two of the auction committee meetings were moved to the hospital while she was receiving cancer treatments. Ginger also served as the vice president of the recently formed nonprofit Parents As Teachers of Rural South-Central Texas.
To give the gift of life and healing and to honor Ginger’s legacy, her eyes were donated. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Schulenburg, since her baptism in 1955.
The family requests that donations may be made to the Schulenburg/ Weimar area Parents As Teachers, Boys & Girls Clubs of Champion Valley or to the charity of one’s choice.
