With an increase in property values, the Schulenburg City Council proposed a slightly lower tax rate for the coming fiscal year at its regular meeting Monday,Aug. 16. CityAdministrator Tami Walker recommended the “voter approval rate” of $0.21113 per $100 of valuation.

The Fayette County Commissioners Court approved a proposed property tax rate for the 2023 budget at $0.44219 per $100 valuation, a decrease from the current rate of $0.4640. Any amount above $0.44219, known as the “voter approval tax rate,” would require an election.

Mateen gets life sentence for shooting of deputy

An Austin County jury found Shazizz Mateen guilty of the offense of aggravated assault on a public servant on Tuesday, Aug. 9 and Mateen was sentenced to life in prison and a $10,000 fine, according to Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office Narcotics K-9 Unit seized 13 kilos of Fentanyl with a potential street value of over $200 million during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 at Flatonia on Tuesday, Aug. 9, according to Sheriff Keith Korenek. Sheriff Korenek reported that at approximately 9:33 a.m.
