Toxic gas leak at Pilot forces evacuations

No serious injuries resulted from a poisonous gas leaking from a tanker trailer at Pilot Monday afternoon, July 11 but it did lead to an evacuation of the immediate area.

The Schulenburg VFD was one of some two dozen departments that responded to a grass fire in Colorado County south of Columbus on Monday, July 11. SVFD Chief Jeff Proske said he and three other firefighters took a grass truck and a tanker to the scene north of Robert R. Well Jr.

Tom Walker, whose 61-year career included 11 seasons at Schulenburg ISD, passed away on July 1 at the age of 88. He guided the Shorthorns to their first state championship in football, winning the Class 1A title in 1972.

The UIL’s biennial reclassification and realignment in February moved Schulenburg into a highly-competitive football district for the next two years and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has predicted a fifth-place finish for the Shorthorns this fall.
