Gov. recognizes Shorthorn Band

The Schulenburg Shorthorn Band recently received recognition as an official representative of the state of Texas from Gov. Greg Abbott. This means the band has been recognized by the Governor’s Office as an official representative of the state at the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

Funding for new and existing businesses got a boost after action by the Schulenburg City Council at last week’s meeting. Following an executive session, the aldermen voted unanimously in favor of the Economic Development Corporation’s recommendation to terminate the agreement with Blinn College.

The Fayette County Republican Party held a political forum for the contested races for Precinct 4 commissioner and Fayette County judge on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22 at Sengelmann Hall in Schulenburg. Over 60 people attended.

In light of the recent violence and murders spanning many small, rural towns in Texas, three local women decided to collectively work together to encourage the idea of doing more together and mental health awareness.

Fayette Community Foundation (FCF) administered a $4,000 designated grant to local nonprofit, And Then a New Day, on Monday, Jan. 10. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide meaningful work, social and life opportunities for young adults on the autism spectrum or who have intellectual disabilities.

The Schulenburg Literary Club held its January meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at noon in the Schulenburg Public Library. Hostesses Betty Herzik, Lily Hilscher and Marilyn Mokwa prepared a luncheon of winter salad, lasagne, breadsticks, drinks and a medley of desserts.
