State & area unemployment rates increase in September

The Texas unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent in September, from 6.8 percent the previous month, after dipping from the high of 13.5 percent in April 2020 when the peak of COVID-19 impacts occurred, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Early voting totals top 4,900 through Monday

In the first week of early voting for the Nov. 3 General Election, over 28 percent of registered voters in Fayette County have already cast their ballots, according to the Fayette County Office of the Elections Administrator.

City offers guidelines for trick-or-treating

A set of guidelines for Halloween trick-or-treating was reviewed and informally approved by the Schulenburg City Council at its regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 19. The City of Schulenburg has designated 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 as the window for youngsters to trick-or-treat.

Bench placed downtown in memory of Sustrs

The Swiss Alp Dance Club donated a bench to the City of Schulenburg honoring the memory of Ben and Rene Sustr and their years as president and secretary/treasurer of the organization. The bench is located in downtown Schulenburg in the Railroad Park near the Gazebo on Main Street.

Steeple restoration at Freyburg UMC completed

It was a bright, sunny Friday morning at Freyburg United Methodist Church earlier this month and the outside of the historic structure, built in 1879, looked absolutely pristine. But that wasn’t always the case.

Automated CPR machine approved for EMS

A Stryker Lucas 3 mechanical CPR machine for Fayette County EMS was approved by the Commissioners Court at its meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8. Grant funds received from the Capital Area Trauma Regional Advisory Council will be used for the purchase.
