State unemployment stays steady in July, area rates increase slightly

For the second straight month, the statewide seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate registered at 4.0 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.Fayette County’s rate (not seasonally adjusted) rose one-tenth of a percent to 3.8 in July.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) announced in a press release on Thursday, Aug. 7 that $4,107,388 was awarded to libraries across the state in 2025-26 through its Library Infrastructure Facility Improvement (LIFI) Grants.

SHS football program scores $5,000 through T-Mobile program

Shorthorn football players, coaches, and cheerleaders accept a $5,000 check from representatives of T-Mobile as part of the wireless network operator’s Friday Night 5G Lights grant program. The presentation was made during Schulenburg ISD’s “Meet the Athletes” night on Friday, Aug. 8.

Budget talks held at special Court meeting

Discussions related to the 2026 budget dominated a special meeting of the Fayette County Commissioners Court on Thursday, Aug. 7.County Auditor Cindy Havelka said she was needing several decisions, including assistance given to entities in the county.

City’s M&O tax rate proposed at $0.18909 with 5.642 cents added

The “no new revenue” tax rate for maintenance and operations was proposed for 2025-26 by the Schulenburg City Council at its regular meeting last week.The aldermen also voted unanimously to set a public hearing on the tax rate for Monday, Aug. 18 at 6:15 p.m.

A 911 call reporting a structure fire on Highway 77 north of La Grange near Bear Creek Road was received by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, Aug. 10 around 9:54 a.m., according to Sheriff Keith Korenek.The La Grange Volunteer Fire Department was notified and responded to the scene.
