TPWD anticipates strong dove population as season opens statewide Sept. 1 for first time

For a third year in a row, Texas received significant rain in the spring across most of the state, bolstering the previous year’s healthy dove populations. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologist’s estimate both mourning and white-winged doves are near record highs again.

SHS runners compete at Cuero meet

Schulenburg High School’s cross country runners competed in their first meet of 2026 at the Cuero Invitational, held at Cuero Municipal Park on Saturday, Aug. 29.In the junior varsity boys’ division, three of five Shorthorns earned medals and the team finished third.

Lady Horns even record, place third in local tournament

After a four-set loss to Class 4A Bellville, Schulenburg won five of eight matches in the Lady Horn Classic last week to improve to 9-9 on the season.At SHS Gym on Tuesday, the Brahmanettes prevailed 27-25 in game one but the Lady Horns took the second set by 11 points.

Horns head to Hallettsville Friday for season opener

The Shorthorns will travel to Hallettsville for the first game of the 2026 season this Friday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.Schulenburg has moved up to Class 3ADivision II after reaching the second round of the playoffs in 2A-DI last year and finishing with a 6-6 record.
