Charles Aschenbeck, who lives in Schulenburg, took these photos of the annular solar eclipse (also known as a “ring of fire” eclipse”) on Saturday, Oct. 14. He says the took the photos eight miles west of Fredericksburg.

County 4-H’ers enter Food Challenge at State Fair

Thirteen Fayette County 4-H members competed in the State Fair of Texas Food Challenge Contest held on Monday, Oct. 2 in Dallas. The Fayette County 4-H senior team consisting of Tori Newton, Elena Supak and Eleanor Carey placed first in senior side dish category and advanced to the final round.

The Schulenburg High School class of 1960 held a reunion on Thursday, Oct. 5 at Robert’s Steakhouse in Flatonia. At this time, 64 years ago, the classmates were starting their senior year at SHS.

Swiss Alp-Ammannsville Dubina Farm Bureau The Swiss Alp-Ammannsville-Dubina Farm Bureau will hold its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Swiss Alp Farm Bureau hall. The social will start at 6 p.m., followed by a potluck supper. A business meeting will be held after the supper.

Hallettsville Sacred Heart HSA Apple Strudel Bake The Hallettsville Sacred Heart HSA will hold its 71st annual apple strudel bake on Saturday, Oct. 14. Cost is $22 ready-to-eat and $18 unbaked. Pickup will be at the Sacred Heart Family Center in Hallettsville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 14.

Veteran gets over 7,200 cards for 100th birthday

Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman and Texas Land Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham M.D. is honored to update Texans on U.S. Army veteran and Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home resident Ethelyn Szad Bell’s request to receive 100 cards for her 100th birthday on Oct. 4.
