TxDOT pedestrian safety campaign under way

Fall and winter months bring shorter days and less light, making it harder for drivers to see – and safely avoid – pedestrians. In 2022, October saw the highest number of crashes involving pedestrians.

SCHULENBURG HIGH 1960 CLASS The Schulenburg High School class of 1960 will hold a reunion on Thursday, Oct. 5 at Robert’s Steakhouse in Flatonia from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please get on the attendance list so there will be a good head count to assist the restaurant.

Master Gardeners to host program on greenhouses

The Bluebonnet Master Gardener lunch-and-learn educational program this month will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Fayette County Agricultural Building, 255 Svoboda Lane, La Grange, and the topic will be “Building the Backyard Greenhouse.” Guest speaker will be Mike Lannou.

State Parks offer prime viewing for annular eclipse

Less than three weeks remain until a much-anticipated annular solar eclipse graces Texas skies. On Saturday, Oct. 14, an annular eclipse will pass over the state from Midland/Odessa to Corpus Christi, with 17 Texas State Parks along its path of greatest eclipse visibility.

TCHCC to host author of book about Antonín Dvořák

The Texas Czech Heritage & Cultural Center in La Grange will host a presentation and book signing for A Summer in Spillville in 1893 on Friday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Hanslik Hall. TCHCC welcomes author Barbara Ortwein of Germany to Texas during her short tour.

Birthday cards sought for WWII veteran turning 100

Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham is challenging Texans to show their support for Ethelyn Szad Bell, U.S. Army veteran and Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home resident, on her 100th birthday. Mrs. Bell’s centennial celebration will be on Wednesday, Oct.

Legion and Auxiliary had monthly meetings Sept. 5

American Legion McBride Post 143 and Auxiliary held their monthly meetings on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Commander Bob Heinrich called the meetings to order with 38 Legion and nine Auxiliary members in attendance. Auxiliary chaplain Linda Dieringer read the opening prayer.

Round Top library lists programs during October

The Round Top Family Library is offering a number of free programs during October: •Yoga – Mondays at 5 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. •Story time – Wednesdays at 10 a.m. •Author Author Book Fair – Sunday, Oct. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. •Homeschool play date – Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.
